In earthworms, the mouth is covered by the prostomium. It is a lobe that is also used as a wedge for the earthworm to make cracks in the soil through which the worms crawl.

In a mature worm, segments 14-16 are covered by a prominent dark band of glandular tissue called "clitellum".
