Ectopic pregnancy or tubal pregnancy, is a complication of pregnancy where the embryo attaches outside the uterus. Causes include pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, intrauterine surgery, smoking, previous ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis, and tubal ligation. Cilia damage in the Fallopian tubes is likely to lead to an ectopic pregnancy. Women who smoke have a predisposition of developing an ectopic pregnancy in the fallopian tubes due to the damages caused to the cilia. As cilia degenerate the amount of time it takes for the fertilized egg to reach the uterus will increase. The fertilized egg will hatch from the non-adhesive zona pellucida and implant itself inside the fallopian tube if it does not reach the uterus in time, hence causing the abnormal pregnancy.
