Question

In Electrophilic substitution reaction why is Selenium a good oxidizing agent ?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Selenium is a good oxidising agent. This is due to higher stability of lower oxidation state in Selenium due to inert pair effect. Oxidising agents are the ones that oxidises the other and itself gets reduced. Reduction means gain of electron and so less positive oxidation state.
Now, since lower oxidation state in Selenium is more stable, so it gets easily reduced.
