In fig. 9.28 Seg AD || seg DC and Seg DA Seg AB. Further DC = 7cm, CB = 10cm and AB= 13cm. FInd the area of ABCD.

Given:
Seg AB seg DC and seg DA seg AB

Construction:
Draw a perpendicular from CE to AB.

AE = DC = 7 cm

EB = AB – AE = (13 – 7) cm = 6 cm

In BEC, we have:
BC2 = CE2+EB2 (By pythagoras theorem)102 = CE2 +62 CE2 = 100-36 CE2 = 64 CE =8 cm

Area of the trapezium = 12× (sum of parallel sides) × height
= 12× (7 + 13) × 8 cm2
= 80 cm2
