In Fig. (a) and Fig. (b), two air-cored solenoids P and Q have been shown.

They are placed near each other. In Fig. (a), when IP , the current in P, changes at the rate of 5 A/s, an emf of 2 mV is induced in Q. The current in P is then switched off, and a current changing at 2 A/s is fed through Q as shown in diagram. What emf will be induced in solenoid P?

The correct option is C 8×104 V
Mutual inductance (M) depends on geometric shape and relative orientation of two coils. Hence for both cases the M will be same.
Between solenoid P and Q if current in P is varrying
di1dt=5 A/s
ε1=Mdi1dt
2×103=M×5
M=0.4×103 ...(i)
Between solenoid P and Q if current in Q is varrying:
di2dt=2 A/s
ε2=Mdi2dt
Putting the value of M from Eq (i),
ε2=0.4×103×2 V
ε2=8×104 V
Hence ε2 is the emf induced in solenoid P.
