Consider the diagram given in the question.

A is common in both the triangles, ADE and ABC.

Also,
ADE=B

Since, two angles of triangles ADE and ABC are equal, therefore,
ADEABC

Using properties of similar triangles, we have
ADAB=DEBC
ADAE+EB=DEBC
6.88.6+2.4=DE5.5
DE=6.82=3.4 cm

Hence, DE is 3.4 cm.
