Question

In Fig, man A is standing on a movable plank while man b is standing on a stationary platform. Both are pulling the string down such that the plank moves slowly up. Solution

The correct option is C 4/3
R.E.F image
The length of the string passing over pulley 2=L1+L2
If plank moves up by x1, then pulley 2 moves down by x1
Let the length of string that slips through B be x2
Then after displacement, length of the string passing
over pulley 2=L12x1+L2+x2x1=L1+L23x1+x2
Since inital length of string = final length of string
L1+L2=L1+L23x1+x2x2=3x1
length of string that slips through A=x2+x1=4x1
and length of string that slips through B=x2=3x1
The ratio of length of string that slips through
the hands of A and B is 4x13x1=43
