Question

In figure, AB and CD are two perpendicular diameters of a circle with centre O. If OA=7 cm, find the area of the shaded region. [Take π=22/7]

Solution

Radius of big circle =OA=7cm.
AB=14 cm and CBD=90°
Area of big circle=πr2=π×7×7=49π cm2.
Similarly,
Area of circle with diameter AO=πr2=π×72×72=49π4 cm2.

Area of triangle BCD=12×(CD×OB)=12(14×7)=49 cm2.

Area of shaded region = Area of big circle - Area of circle with diameter AO - Area of triangle BCD
Area of shaded region = 49π cm249π4 cm249 cm2=66.5 cm2.
