In general, does it become colder or warmer as the latitude increases? Give reasons.

Solution

Generally, an increase in the latitude results in a colder condition. Latitude refers to the distance of a place from the equator. The equator receives vertical solar rays and thus, regions that are closer to equator (low latitude) tend to be warmer. Places that are far from equator (high latitude) tend to receive slanting solar rays and a large amount of solar heat is absorbed by the thick atmospheric layer of these areas, which keeps these regions cool.
