Question

In going from O2 to O+2, the bond dissociation energy increases and bond length decreases. Do we expect the same behavior for the change N2 and N+2?

Open in App
Solution

It can be explained on the concept of bond order.
In O2 bond order is 2.
In O+2, bond order =(No. of electrons in bonding orbital)(No. of electrons in antibonding)2
In O+2, bond order =1055=2.5.
O+2 has more bond order than O2. If bond order increases, bond dissosiation energy increases and bond length decreases.
In N2 bond order is 3.
In N+2, bond order is 942=2.5 .
Bond order decreases from 3 to 2.5. N+2 has different behavior and not same with O+2. From N2 to N+2, bond dissosiation energy decreases and bond length increases.
