In group VIII of the Periodic Table, why does cobalt with atomic mass 58.93 appear before nickel having atomic mass 58.71?

Mendleev's periodic table was based on increasing atomic mass but at some places he gave priority to similar chemical properties and arranged elements with higher atomic mass before lower atomic mass. Therefore, cobalt was placedbefore nickel.
