Question

In household wiring, which 2 wires have the same potential?

Open in App
Solution

Potential

Potential is the amount of work done by the external agency to bring a unit charge particle from infinity to a particular point against an electric field

Earthing and neutral wire

  1. In household wiring, there are two wires that have the same potential. one is earthing and the other is a neutral wire.
  2. The earth wire or grounded wire is green in color and used for safety purposes. It is not conducting any current in the circuit. But in case of insulation failure, it carries some small amount of current.
  3. Neutral is the return path for an AC circuit that helps to complete the circuit. It carries current in some normal conditions. This is because of the phase current imbalance. The neutral wire is black in color.
  4. Both wires earthing and neutral are connected with the ground system. So, earthing and neutral wires have the same potential (basically zero potential in household electric circuits).

So, the earthing and the neutral wires have the same potential.
