CO is the major air pollutant which is produced due to the incomplete combustion of the fuels. In humans, the hemoglobin has more affinity towards CO rather than O2. The binding of the hemoglobin with CO forms carboxyhemoglobin which causes a decrease in the amount of oxygen transported to the tissues in the body. This results in anoxia which is lack of oxygen resulting into death.
