The endometrium or the innermost lining of the uterus thickens each time an egg is released. The thickening is due to the increase in the number of blood vessels in order to provide a surplus supply of nutrients and oxygen to the embryo if the released egg gets fertilized.
If the egg does not get fertilized, the uterus lining sheds off in the process called menstruation. So, this endometrium thickening is not permanent.
