Spermatogonia located in the outermost layer of the seminiferous tubules continuously divide mitotically, each having 46 chromosomes identical to the parent cell. Some of these spermatogonia divide mitotically twice to form 4 identical primary spermatocytes each. After this the primary spermatocytes enter meiosis. Each primary spermatocyte undergoes the first meiotic division to yield a pair of secondary spermatocytes, which undergo further division. The haploid cells thus formed are called spermatids.
