Question

In Kinetic theory of matter it is stated that Intermolecular force of attraction is based on distance of molecules and and on type of molecules. When i distinguish between ice and (liquid) water what exactly do you mean by type of molecule.

Solution

Ice which is the solid state of water has strong intermolecular forces or less intermolecular space while water (in liquid state) the intermolecular forces are weak as the intermolecular spacing is large. Vineet is right that these intermolecular forces determine the kinetic energy.
