Usage of oxygen is better in steelmaking. Its main advantages is that it did not expose the steel to excessive nitrogen which would cause the steel to become brittle, is easier to control, and it permitted the melting and refining of large amounts of scrap iron and steel as nitrogen carries away a lot of heat and hence attaining the required temperature is tedious.
