Question

In metaphase which structure serves as the site of attachment of spindle fibers to the chromosome?

Solution

Kinetochores:

  1. At specific times during the cell cycle, checks are made to make sure that the proper cellular division occurs.
  2. Making sure the spindle fibres are properly attached to the chromosomes at their kinetochores is one of the checks.
  3. Every chromosome should have two kinetochores that are coupled to microtubules from different spindle poles.
  4. Errors result if the dividing cell does not discover that it has a variety of connected chromosomes.
  5. The cell cycle process is stopped once faults are found until fixes are made.
  6. If these mistakes or mutations cannot be fixed, the cell may die through a process known as necrobiosis.
