Question

in michael faraday's cathode ray discharge tube experiment, why is low pressure maintained in the cathode tube ?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student
The cathode ray discharge tube experiment has two main requisites with respect to cathode tube.
1 There should be high voltage as in high enough for electrons to collide with florescent screen.
2 Low Pressure : this is done so that the electrons do not collide with the air molecules present in the tube or else they would be deflected.
Hence, low pressure is maintained, the only source of kinetic energy for the cathode rays thus is the voltage.
