Introduction to autoimmune disease
The immune system has the property of distinguishing between self molecules and foreign molecules. In some diseases, this ability is lost and the body starts making antibodies against its cells resulting in various disorders called autoimmune diseases.
Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which antibodies are synthesised which causes inflammation of the synovial membrane, as a result, more synovial fluid is secreted leading to inflammation. The articular cartilage which acts as a shock absorber is also eroded leading to pain.

In old age people, the autoimmune disorder called rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints leading to inflammation and pain.
