Let's take a sample of a radioactive element with N0 nuclide. Average time tavg= 1/λ
Let's see how many nuclei remain after tavg N =N0eλt
Substituting value of t we get
N =N0eλ1λ
N = N0/e
So after one average-life N0/e nuclei would remain acitive.
That means N0(N0/e) Would have decayed wheras in a half-life only N0/2 would have decayed.
So in one average life more than half the active nuclei decay.
