In plant morphology, different modifications of leaves are seen. These are thorns, spines, prickles. All these structures are sharp, stiff and perform the same function that is defense. Due to the scarcity of water in the desert, in some plants leaves are modified to form spines. The spines act as defensive structures. Plants like cactus have a particular kind of spines that are very small and deciduous with many barbs along its length. This type of spine is called as glochidium and is found in aereoles of Optunia.
