Solution

Sandmayer reaction:

  • To Convert Aniline To Chloro Benzene, substitute the amino group from the ring with chlorine
  • That is, whatever reagent is added during this reaction, should react with the amino-functional groups.

Step 1 Formation of diazonium salt

The Sodium nitrite(NaNO2) and Hydrochloric acid(HCl) react with Aniline to form diazonium salt.

Step 2 Formation of Chlorobenzene

If this diazonium salt is allowed to react with Cuprous chlorideCuCl, then it will replace the diazonium group on the aromatic ring and will give Chlorobenzene as a product.

  • For this reaction Sodium nitrite(NaNO2), Hydrochloric acid(HCl), and Cuprous chlorideCuClare used

Therefore, in order to convert Aniline to Chloro Benzene, the reagents needed are Sodium nitrite(NaNO2), Hydrochloric acid(HCl), and Cuprous chlorideCuCl.
