Question

In order to obtain 1 tonne of aluminum, the following inputs are required: four tonnes of bauxite, 150Kg of sodium hydroxide, and 600Kg of graphite. The aluminum compound in bauxite is aluminum oxide and the main impurity is iron(III) oxide. Aluminum is obtained by the electrolysis of aluminum oxide dissolved in cryolite.

Write the equation of action of heat on Aluminum Hydroxide

Solution

  • Bauxite(Al2O3.2H2O) is the ore of Aluminum.
  • Bauxite contains about 60% of Aluminum OxideAl2O3 and other oxides such as Iron, Silicon, and Titanium.
  • In order to remove the impurities, the ore is treated with Sodium Hydroxide and it will dissolve the Aluminum oxide and forms Sodium Aluminate.
  • The reaction is,
  • Al2O3.2H2O(s)Bauxite+2NaOH(aq)Sodiumhydroxideā†’2NaAlO2(aq)Sodiumaluminate+H2O(l)Water
  • The Sodium aluminate is then dissolved in water to obtain Aluminum Hydroxide. The reaction is,
  • NaAlO2(aq)SodiumAluminate+2H2O(l)ā†’Al(OH)3(s)Aluminumhydroxide+NaOH(aq)SodiumHydroxide
  • The Aluminum hydroxide is then heated to produce pure Aluminum oxide or Alumina.
  • The reaction is:2Al(OH)3(s)Aluminumhydroxideā†’1200Ā°CAl2O3Alumina(s)+3H2O(l)
