Question

in oxidation how the subs. loses electrons explain and how it gains electrons in reduction . ??

Solution

Addition of oxygen is oxidation and removal of oxygen is reduction. This is according tothe old definition. For ex.,Fe2O3 + 3CO 2Fe + 3CO2See here Fe is reduced from Fe2O3 to Fe (removal of oxygen)CO is oxidised to carbondioxide (addition of oxygen)As per the modern theory, you can find the oxidation and reduction by electron changeswhich is easier. In the left side the oxidation state of Fe isFe2O32x+ 3(-2) = 02x = 6x=+3In right side, the oxidation state of Fe is zero. Thus decrease in oxidation state occur from +3 to zeroFe+3 + 3e- FeThus reduction occur.(Comparing with the previous theory also its reduction)In the left side the oxidation state of Carbon isCOx+ (-2) = 0x = +2In right side, the oxidation state of Carbon isCO2x+2 (-2) = 0x = +4Thus increase in oxidation state occur from +2 to +4CO+O2- CO2 + 2e-Thus oxidation occur.(Comparing with the previous theory also its oxidation)Thus according to modern theory lose of electron is oxidation and gain of electron is reduction.
