(a) When Sanjogta says, “The clouds are heavy. There is thunder in the air”, the nurse replies, “inside the palace and without.” Explain her reply.

(b) “That was a trick to lure some secret out of you”, says the nurse. What was the trick, and who played it?

(c) What is the Charnamrit? Why does the Nurse scream when it was sent to Mirabai? Having drunk it, what does Mirabai mean when she says, “I paid in full…”?

(a) The nurse’s reply has a double meaning. The apparent reference is to the stormy disposition of the weather. The second reference is to the unfavourable, cloud-like disposition of the royal family towards Mirabai.

(b) The trick was to make Mirabai send a message to Jaimall. This would then be intercepted by the queen.

The trick was played by a servant whom the queen had sent.

(c) Charnamrit literally means “nectar from the feet of the Gods”. Here, it is the water which is used for washing Rana Sanga’s feet. The nurse screams because she is sure that it is poisoned.

By saying this, Mirabai means that she has proved her devotion by accepting that which was considered deadly.
