Let driving source =V, Resistance and length of potentiometer wire =R and L1, Balancing length =l1, cell voltage =E
So at balancing point-
EV=l1L1
After changing length of potentiometer wire =L2, balancing length =l2
Now EV=l2L2
By solving
l2=l1(L2L1)

As L2>L1l2>l1
