Solution

  • The layer of sensory cells that line the inner surface of the back of the eyeball is called the retina.
  • This layer consists of photoreceptor cells like cones and rods.
  • Rod photoreceptors are responsible for the detection of motion, provide black-and-white vision and enable vision in low light.
  • Cones are responsible for central and colour vision and have the best performance in medium and bright light.
  • The rods are located throughout the retina, while the cones are concentrated in a small central area of the retina known as the macula.
  • The centre of the macula has a small depression which is called fovea.
  • The fovea (centre of eye's sharpest vision) contains only cones and is the point in the retina where the sharpest vision is possible.
