In order to test J.J Thomson’s atomic model, Rutherford set up an experiment where he made alpha particle to pass through gold foil and he hypothesized that alpha rays particles would pass through the gold foil with or no deflection. But when he made clear observation alpha particles were deflected greatly. This showed that the atom is made up of mainly empty space expect for nucleus in middle has the most mass in the atom.
