In Rutherford's scattering experiment, a piece of thin gold foil was bombarded with alpha particles. It was observed that some of the alpha particles suffered a large deflection (more than 90∘) and some were even deflected by 180∘.
Since, very few particles suffered this large deflection i.e. less than or equal to 0.14 % of alpha particles scatter more than 1∘, it implied that the mass was present in a very small area inside an atom.
