Question

In S block hydrides, does acidic strength increase down a group? What about P block hydrides?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Top to bottom in S- block hydrides ionic character increases, which means ionization increases and increase in ionization leads to increase in acidic strength. Hence, acidic strength increases down the group in S- block hydrides.

The same trend is followed in P- block hydrides also, another reason to explain this trend is down the group atomic size increases and bond strength decreases and due to a decrease in bond strength compounds can easily donate H+ ions which makes them stronger acid.
