Question

In some countries, a person will receive a driving while intoxicated (DWI) ticket if the blood alcohol level (BAL) is 100 mg per decilitre (dL) of blood or higher. Suppose a person is found to have a BAL of 0.033 mole of ethanol (C2H5OH) per litre of blood. Will a person receive a DWI ticket?
Enter 1 if yes and 2 if no.

Solution

1 L corresponds to 10 dL.
Hence, the BAL of 0.033 mole/L corresponds to 0.0033 mole /dL.
The molar mass of ethanol is 46 g/mol.
Hence, the BAL is 46 g/mol ×0.0033 mol/dL =0.1518 g/dL =152 g/dL
This exceeds prescribed limit. Hence, the person receives a DWI ticket.
