Primary xylem, formed from procambium, are of two types - protoxylem and metaxylem.
Protoxylem is the first formed primary xylem element.
Metaxylem is the primary xylem that is formed after the protoxylem.

The protoxylem and metaxylem are arranged differently in stem and root. In stem, the protoxylem is towards the pith (centre) and metaxylem is towards the periphery. This condition is known as the endarch condition.

In the case of roots, the protoxylem is towards the periphery and the metaxylem is towards the pith (centre). This is known as the exarch condition.
