Transpiration pull or cohesion-tension theory was proposed by Dixon and Jolly (1894) Water molecules form a continuous column by cohesion. The cell walls of xylem vessels have a strong affinity for water molecules, i.e. adhesion. Loss of water from aerial parts through transpiration cause a suction pressure in the water column of plant which is called transpiration pull.
