When an ionic chemical reaction occurs on a metal's surface while oxygen while oxygen is present, oxidation of metal takes place. There is a movement of electrons from the metal to the oxygen molecules during this process. The negative oxygen ions generated enter the metal & leads to the creation of an oxide surface. Thus, oxidation is a form of metal corrosion.
