In terms of electron transfer, define
(a) Oxidation
(b) Reduction
(a) Oxidation in terms of electron transfer can be defined as the removal of electrons from the atom. In other words, loss of electrons from the atom is called oxidation. For example, magnesium metal loses its two valence electrons and is oxidised to Mg2+ ion.
(b) Reduction in terms of electron transfer can be defined as the gain of electrons by an atom. In other words, gain of electrons by an atom is called reduction. For example, chlorine atom gains one electron and is reduced to Cl- ion.
