Acrosome is a cap-like structure over the anterior half of the sperm's head. When the sperm reaches the egg, the membrane surrounding the acrosome fuses with the plasma membrane of the oocyte. As a result, the contents of the acrosome are released. The contents include the enzyme (hyaluronidase) which is a hydrolytic enzyme that digests hyaluronic acid in the corona radiata of the ovum and thereby allowing fertilization to take place.
