In the adjacent diagram, CP represents a wavefront and AO and BP, the corresponding two ray. Find the condition on θ for constructive interference at P between the ray BP and reflected ray OP.

Given that,

Wave front = CP

Reflect ray = OP

AO and BP the corresponding two rays

Now, according to diagram

PR=d

PO=dsecθ

CO=POcos2θ

Now, put the value of PO

CO=dsecθcos2θ

Now, path difference between the two rays

Δ=CO+PO

Δ=dsecθ+dsecθcos2θ

Now, phase difference between the two rays

ϕ=π

Now, for constructive interference should be

Δ=λ2,3λ2....

dsecθ+dsecθcos2θ=λ2

dsecθ(1+cos2θ)=λ2

dcosθ(2cos2θ)=λ2

cosθ=λ4d

θ=cos1(λ4d)

Hence, the condition on θ is cos1(λ4d)
