In the arrangement of three blocks as shown in the figure, the string is inextensible. If the directions of accelerations are as shown in the given figure, and a1+a2=na3, then find n.

Let us assume the respective distance of each block as shown in figure. Since the length of the string is constant, therefore, x1+x2+2x3= constant
On differentiating twice w.r.t. time, we get
d2x1dt2+d2x2dt2+2d2x3dt2=0
Since x1 and x2 are assumed to be decreasing with time, therefore,
d2x1dt2=a1 and d2x2dt2=a2
and x3 is assumed to be increasing with time, therefore,
d2x3dt2=+a3
Thus a1a2+2a3=0 or a1+a2=2a3
