In the arrangement shown in the figure, mA=1 kg,mB=4 kg. String is light and inextensible while pulley is smooth. Coefficient of friction between the block A and the table is μ=0.2. Find the speed of both the blocks when block B has descended by a height h=1 m. ( Take g=10 m/s2).

The correct option is B 3.9 m/s
From constraint relation,
vA=vB=v (say)
Friction between block A and table will be f=μmAg=(0.2)(1)(10)=2 N

When block B descends by height h, block A moves horizontally by same distance.
From work-energy theorem;
Wnoncons=ΔU+ΔK.E
fh=mBgh+12(mA+mB)v2
(2)(1)=(4)(10)(1)+12(1+4)v2
2=(40)+(2.5)v2
v2=15.2
v=3.9 m/s
