Less strongly electropositive alkaline earth metals occupy the descending positions on the curve. Therefore, Mg occupies a descending position on the curve.

If we see the graph between atomic volume and atomic weight of the elements, we will notice the following features:
i) Alkali metals such as Na, K, Rb which have similar properties occur at peaks of the curve. He didn't mention alkaline earth metals.
