Question

In the basic CsCl (Cesium
chloride) crystal, Cs+ ions form the corners of a cube and a Cl- ion is
at the centre of cube. Edge length is 0.40 nm.
a) What is the magnitude of the net electrostatic force exerted on
Cl- ion by the eight Cs+ ions.?
(b) If one of the Cs+ ion is missing the crystal is said to have defect.
How much will be the force on chlorine ion in that case?

Solution

The distance between cl and Cs atom is 32a distance where a is the side.now magnitude of teh force will be 8 times e24πε0(32a)2=8(1.6×10-19)(9×109)232×0.4= 103.68.3464=299.30 N(b) is one sight is missing then the magnitude of teh force will be =7(1.6×10-19)(9×109)232×0.4=261.88 N
