In the British period, the following new opportunities opened up for people who came from castes that were regarded as " low " :-
  1. In the digging of drains and laying of roads, the people from the low caste were employed as these were considered inferior jobs.
  2. For constructing buildings, cleaning of cities, cleaning of sewage etc. required new manpower and this was fulfilled by the people from lower caste.
  3. Setting up of schools by Christian missionaries for tribal groups and lower-caste children also opened new opportunities for lower caste.
