Open in App
Solution

Respiration:

  1. Respiration is the process of release of energy by breaking down food molecules(glucose) that are stored in the body cells.
  2. There are two types of respiration: Aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.
  3. The process of liberation of energy during the oxidation of food molecules in presence of oxygen is known as aerobic respiration.
  4. In the majority of plants and animals, energy is released from food by aerobic respiration.
  5. During aerobic respiration, the glucose molecule is oxidised to release carbon dioxide, water and energy.
    • Aerobic respiration follows the following equation:

C6H12O6 + O2 ⇢ CO₂ + H2O + energy(ATP)
(Glucose) (oxygen) (carbon dioxide) (water)
Final answer:
In the cells, oxygen (of air) brings about the breakdown of food.
