Solution

The correct option is D When S1 and S3 is closed, V1=50 V and V2=25 V
Let the charges on capacitor C1 and C2 be q1 and q2 respectively.

q1=C1V1=50(4)=200 PC

q2=C2V2=8(25)=200 PC

When S1 is closed, the two capacitors remain isolated, and because the charge on both the capacitors are same, potential difference remains unchanged.

Similarly, when S2 is closed, potential difference remains unchanged.

When S1 and S2 both are closed, still the two capacitors behave as isolated entities, and because the charge on them is same, the potential difference remains unchanged.

When switch S1 and S3 is closed, c1 and c2 are in series and same charge is accumulated on both c1 and c2. As we know that in series combination the charge remains the same.

So, potential across the two capacitors again remains unchanged.

Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.
