In the absorption chamber of the contact process, First sulphur trioxide is absorbed in sulphuric acid to give oleum.
$S O_{3} + H_{2} S O_{4} \to H_{2} S_{2} O_{7}$
Then this oleum is diluted with soft water to obtain the sulphuric acid of desired concentration.
$H_{2} S_{2} O_{7} + H_{O} \to 2 H_{2} S O_{4}$
