Question

In the experimental setup of metre bridge shown in the figure, the null point is obtained at a distance of 40 cm from A. If a 10 Ω resistor is connected in series with R1 Ω , the null point is observed to shift by 10 cm from A. Find the resistance that should be connected in parallel with (R1+10)Ω such that the null point shifts back to its initial position is

Solution

The correct option is C 60 Ω
Step-(I):

R1R2=l100l=4060=23R1=23R2

Step-(II):

When 10 Ω is connected in series with R1 the balancing length is 40+10=50 cm.

R1+10R2=5010050=1R1+10=R2

23R2+10=R210=R23

R2=30Ω and R1=20Ω

Step-(III):

To bring the null point to the initial position, a resistance x is connected parallel to R1+10=30Ω

ie (30x30+x)R2=406030x(30+x)30=23

3x=60+2x

x=60 Ω

Hence, option (c) is the correct answer.
