In the figure a smooth pulley of negligible weight is suspended by spring balance 1 kg and 5 kg are attached to the opposite ends of spring passing over pulley and move with acceleration because of gravity. During the motion, spring balance reads weight of ?

Solution

From the FBD of blocks we can write Newton's 2nd law equation as:
For 5 kg block: 5gT=5a
For 1 kg block : Tg=a
adding both equation we get value of a=4g6=2g3ms2
using this in any one of the above equation we get value of as T=g+a=5g3N
Now, from FBD we can see that reading of spring balance will be 2T, hence spring balance will read weight of 10g3=33.34N
