Translational and Rotational Equilibrium

In the figure, a uniform bar of length $l$ m is supported at its ends and loaded by a weight $W$ kgf at its middle. In equilibrium, find the reactions $R_{1} a n d R_{2}$ at the ends.

Solution

For mechanical equilibrium, $R_{1} + R_{2} = W$ .....(i)
For rotational equilibrium, $R_{1} \frac{l}{2} = R_{2} \frac{l}{2}$

$\Rightarrow R_{1} = R_{2}$

Substituting in (i), we get $R_{1} = R_{2} = \frac{W}{2}$
