In the figure below AB, CD and EF are parallel lines. Given AB=7.5cm , DC=ycm. EF=4.5cm, BC=xcm and CE=3cm. Calculate the values of x and y.
The correct option is A x=5cm and y=21316cm
In △BCD and △BEF,
∠DBC=∠FBE (Common angle)
∠BCD=∠BEF (Corresponding angles of parallel lines CD and EF)
∠BDC=∠BFE (Corresponding angles of parallel lines CD and EF)
Thus, △BCD∼△BEF (AAA rule)
Hence, BCBE=BDBF=CDEF (Corresponding sides)
⇒xx+3=BDBF=y4.5 ..(I)
Similarly, △FCD∼△FAB
Thus, FCFA=CDAB=FDFB
⇒y7.5=DFBF (II)
From I and II,
⇒BD=y4.5BF and DF=y7.5BF
⇒BD+DF=BF
⇒y4.5BF+y7.5BF=BF
⇒7.5y+4.5y=7.5×4.5
⇒y=4516
Also, xx+3=y4.5
⇒xx+3=4516×4.5
⇒xx+3=4572
⇒72x=45x+135
⇒27x=135
⇒x=5 cm
